1. What is Rock Tumbling?

Rock tumbling is the process of smoothing and polishing rough stones using a tumbler, grit, and water. A typical tumbling cycle takes 3–5 weeks, transforming rough rocks into smooth, polished gemstones.

2. What You Need

• Rotary or vibratory tumbler

• Grit: coarse (60/90), medium (120/220), fine (400), polish

• Plastic pellets (optional)

• Rocks of similar hardness (Mohs hardness within ±1)

• Water

3. The Four Stages

Stage 1 – Coarse Grind (7–10 days)

Shapes stones and removes rough edges.

Stage 2 – Medium Grind (5–7 days)

Smooths scratches from the coarse stage.

Stage 3 – Fine Grind (5–7 days)

Pre-polish stage to refine surfaces.

Stage 4 – Polish (7 days)

Creates final shine and luster.

4. Cleaning Between Stages

Cleaning is critical. Any leftover grit can contaminate later stages. Rinse barrels, stones, and lids outdoors. Do not rinse into sinks—slurry hardens like cement.

5. Tips for Success

• Use stones of similar hardness

• Keep the barrel 2/3 full

• Use pellets with small loads

• Never rush coarse grind—this is the most important stage

• Add water only to just below the top of the stones

6. Common Problems & Fixes

Pits after polish: Extend coarse grind

Scratches after polish: Contamination—clean better

No shine: Too little polish or overfilled barrel

Muddy slurry: Too much grit or not enough water

7. Recommended Starter Rocks

• Jasper

• Agate

• Quartz

• Petrified wood

These stones are durable and polish extremely well.

8. Safety

Never dump slurry down household drains. Always secure the barrel lid correctly. Place tumblers on stable, vibration-safe surfaces.

Final Thoughts

Rock tumbling is relaxing, rewarding, and produces beautiful stones. Once you learn the basics, you can experiment with new stones, mixed materials, and advanced polishing techniques.

Happy Tumbling!
